Many areas of campus are not as well lit as others, making it hard to see someone who may be walking toward you. Just because you are on a college campus does not mean everyone there is just like you, so avoid walking around at night and try walking with someone else as much as possible. Another important rule is to always tell someone where you are going. If no one knows where you are or when you are expected to be back, they won’t know to be concerned if you don’t show up for dinner. Time can be a critical factor if you are ever hurt or missing, so send your roommate a quick text before you go out for a run.
Staying safe also means knowing when to trust your instincts. If your gut is telling you that a situation is wrong or a person is suspicious you should listen to it. If you are feeling uncomfortable you aren’t going to lose anything by turning around or removing yourself from a situation. You should also practice being aware of your surroundings and circumstances. Know where you are going, who is around you, and if you are in a position where you could be compromised. Also, predators are usually looking for someone they can dominate so always walk around confidently and with assuredness.
