After your first semester at school, you are finally home for summer break and find yourself with plenty of free time, plenty of sunshine, and no money at all. After paying for bills and paying for your social life, your wallet is so empty that it almost looks concave. In fact, your bank account is so miserably underfed that if you were in a cartoon, you could expect for a lone moth to fly out of your wallet when you find a reason to crack it open. This can be understandably disconcerting, especially as your friends return home for the summer as well and will be going out often to socialize and reconnect. This means that you will need spending money. Luckily, getting a summer job is a great way to gain just that and so much more.
A summer job is just that – a seasonal job that you will hold only until you have to return to school. Many part-time positions are open for students who are home for the summer, especially in retail stores and restaurants. These employers often take advantage of the increased student worker population during the summertime and hire on several new temporary employees. The summer is a busy time for many businesses because of vacationing families and students with ample free time, so employers are more than willing to take on additional staff for the season. When you land such a position, you will not only be earning money to spend on your summer escapades, but you will also be earning money for your next semester in college. After all, you will want to have spending money then too!
Summer jobs will also help you from becoming too bored. It takes up your time so that you do not spend it laying about the house with nothing to do. If you already have the free time, you may as well put it to use. The good news is, summer jobs are often not too demanding in terms of scheduling, so you will still have plenty of free time to be lazy and relax.
In addition to financial gain, taking on a summer job will also look good on your resume after college. Employers like applicants who are driven and hardworking, and seeing that you regularly sought out employment even during your free time will show employers that you possess those qualities. With so many good things to be gained from summertime employment, it is a wonder that not all students take advantage of it.
