Getting Involved on Campus

By

Freshman year is a scary experience. You’re in a completely new environment – miles away from the security and guidance provided by your parents. If you’re going to school out-of-state, your fear is compounded because you’re all alone. To counteract the anxiety, keep yourself busy by becoming involved in campus activities.

Visit the student services department and inquire about what they have to offer. For example, Texas Tech University has a wide variety of organizations that appeal to a diverse range of students, including the Tech Bowling Club, Texas State Teachers Association, Fashion Board and Young Conservatives of Texas. By acquiring a hobby and participating in an activity you enjoy, you’ll overcome homesickness and assimilate into campus life. You’ll also make new friends who share the same interests. If you want to experience the college life authentically, join a Greek organization. The parties will be aplenty, you might meet your future ex-spouse at a fraternity/sorority mixer, and the affiliation will look good on your resume.

An often overlooked benefit of getting involved on campus is the networking opportunities. When you’re 18 or 19 years old, your chances for finding a job after graduation probably isn’t your first concern. But as you hone your social skills and become immersed into campus life, you’ll find yourself making connections that will benefit you in the future. A recent study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that 70 percent of all jobs are attained through networking. As the old cliché goes, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. In light of recent economic stability, college students should attempt to gain every advantage they can when it comes to finding future employment. Not only will you increase your chances of finding a job, but you’ll be better prepared for it. You’ll acquire teamwork and leaderships skills that are necessary in all fields of work. Getting the most out of your college experience requires a little extra effort. With just a little time spent participating in one of the campus activities offered by your college, you’ll gain a sense of satisfaction while experiencing immediate and long-lasting rewards. As a college student, it’s important that you take advantage of the opportunities while they’re abundant.
