Professors are undoubtedly some of the most important and influential people you will encounter in your college career. They can be educators, mentors, and perhaps most importantly, the keepers of your grade point average. So of course, it’s essential that you learn how to develop good relationships with your professors. Here’s how you can work towards a good professor-student relationship that can help you through the semester and beyond.
Go to class. Unless you’re in a huge seminar course, chances are that your professor will notice you are gone, and they don’t appreciate lecturing to an empty classroom. Practice good attendance so that your professor knows that you care not only about your education, but also hearing what it is that they have to teach you.
Participate during class time. Most professors will favor students that help encourage discussion and offer value to the class. Listen carefully in class, ask questions, and take part in discussions whenever possible. Sharing your learning experience and knowledge with the rest of the class will not go unnoticed by your professor.
Be respectful. Being respectful means paying attention to deadlines, arriving to class on time, and be courteous during class. Your politeness can go a long way to letting your professor know that you’re respectful of their work and the contribution that they are making to your education.
Talk to your professor after or outside of class. Most professors will share their office hours on the syllabus-make note of them.
