College parties have grown more elaborate over the years. It used to be that a group of friends could roll out a keg and buy some pizzas and they could call it a party. It seems that isn’t enough these days. One of the most popular party themes these days is the "ugly Christmas sweater" party. You don’t have to use your imagination to picture what this party looks like. The goal with this holiday party is to dress up in the ugliest winter/Christmas sweater you can find. Students have a blast trying to outdo one another in terms of who can wear the most tasteless sweater.
Keep in mind that most colleges are off during the Christmas season, so these parties usually take place at the end of the fall semester in early December. This is right around the end of the exam period so students are looking for a fun way to let off some steam before going home for the break between semesters. This party gives students a chance to spread some holiday cheer with their college friends.
The group of students throwing this party should decorate their dorm or apartment with holiday adornments. Your friends will understand if you don’t buy a real Christmas tree (they can be expensive and you probably don’t have any ornaments), but you can find cheap decorations. If they’re cheap, they will probably be tacky which fits in nicely with the theme of your party. You should also supply holiday treats and drinks. If your crowd doesn’t go for the eggnog, dye their drinks green and red to spread some holiday cheer. There are tons of fun Christmas songs to set up a great playlist in the background.
Ultimately, it all boils down to how creative your guest get with their sweaters. Some of the best sweaters are the ones that people wear that they actually received as gifts over the years. If you are unlucky (or lucky?) enough to never have owned one of these hideous sweaters, you can find them at thrift stores or novelty shops. These parties have become so popular recently that many department stores are actually selling these sweaters! Give prizes out to the guests wearing the ugliest sweaters and be sure to take tons of pictures.
