Being safe on campus is a paramount concern for any student. It is essential that you always act in the safest and most cautious means possible or else face potentially dangerous consequences. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in many situations:
When you leave your dorm room, lock up. Make sure your windows are closed and the door to your room is shut and/or locked. People have friends and strangers alike in and out of dorms, make sure your room is not accessible to anyone but you. Consider investing in a wireless security alarm system for your apartment or dorm. They are easy to set-up and transportable for when you move. Alarm systems come with a remote control, panic button, sirens, sensors and more.
Be mindful of anyone lingering around your home or campus after classes or work. Unfortunately stalking is not uncommon amongst the college student population. If you feel you are being stalked, it is imperative to contact authorities as soon as possible and gather evidence to proof your case if feasible. Check your car before getting in and make sure you lock the doors when leaving and they are still locked and nothing is broken when you return. It may be wise to check under the car as well to do a thorough safety check. Investing in a car alarm system may also serve you well if you are parking in a dangerous area or in general. There is a panic button that is registered inside your vehicle that can be a live-saver in emergency situations.
Try not to travel with large sums of money on you when you are traveling. Try to have a companion with you, especially when it’s dark out. Carrying a personal alarm, taser gun, or mace is a smart idea whether alone or with a crowd. Wearing a panic button may also scare away potential predators if they see it on you. When traveling at night, try to stay in well-lit areas and avoid remote streets. Stay in the middle of the sidewalk and don’t hang around deserted areas.
Be conscious of people who approach asking for directions or the time of day; keep a gracious, but safe distance. One maneuver to be suspicious of is someone asking to use your cell phone to make an emergency call, but there doesn’t seem to be any emergency at hand. If you feel someone is following you, go to the nearest occupied residence or building and ask for assistance.
On the whole, college campuses are safe. Just be sure you are taking reasonable steps to make sure you are doing all you can do stay out of harm’s way.
