Central Connecticut State University

Located in New Britain, Central Connecticut State University is a public, four-year institution established in 1849. The school has been regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1947 and currently serves more than 12,000 students. CCSU was also ranked No. 34 among top public schools by U.S. News & World Report. In an effort to better serve working adults and students who cannot make it regularly to campus, Central Connecticut State University has also expanded their online offerings. Individual online college courses are available in areas such as art, communication, computer technology, design, and political science. An online masters degree program in data mining is also available.

Southern Connecticut State University

Established in 1893 and accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Southern Connecticut State University is the third-oldest school in the Connecticut State University System. The university is located in New Haven and currently serves nearly 12,000 students. The school was ranked No. 41 on U.S. News & World Report’s Top Public Schools list. Along with many other universities in Connecticut, SCSU has taken advantage of technological advances in recent years, implementing a growing distance learning division. The school utilizes a learning management system called eLearning Vista to enhance both campus-based courses and distance learning courses alike. Individual online classes are available in areas such as business administration, business management, computer science, education, management information systems, nursing, psychology, political science, social work, sociology, and theatre. The school also offers a completely online Master of Library Science.

University of Connecticut

Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut is a public research university located in Storrs. The school system also operates campuses in Groton, Stamford, and Waterbury. The main campus has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1931 and currently serves more than 25,000 students. In terms of online education, undergraduate courses are available in professional studies, homeland security, human resources, humanitarian services, health and safety, society and justice, and web technology. The University of Connecticut online also offers master’s degree programs in homeland security leadership, human resource management, and humanitarian services administration. The online business degree programs at the University of Connecticut were ranked No. 7 for admissions selectivity and No. 17 for student engagement and accreditation by U.S. News & World Report.

Students interested in pursuing online education will find a number of colleges and universities in Connecticut offering individual classes as well as fully online degree programs. Most of these classes are set up in an asynchronous format. This gives students the option to log in to the virtual classroom whenever and from where ever is convenient for them.
