Delaware State University

Established in 1891 and regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Delaware State University is a public, land grant institution located in Dover. This historically black college is the second-largest institution of higher learning in the state, serving more than 3,700 students. Delaware State offers Web-enhanced, blended learning, and fully online college courses. Online classes are available in areas such as art, economics, business administration, history, hospitality and tourism management, communications, and nursing. Students enrolled in these distance learning courses will use Blackboard, a state-of-the-art virtual learning platform, which allows students to access their assignments, participate in group discussions, and receive instructor feedback without ever needing to come to campus.

University of Delaware

Located in Newark, the University of Delaware is the largest institution of higher learning in the state with an enrollment of more than 21,000 students. The school also operates campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown. The University of Delaware was officially chartered in 1833, but can trace its roots back to 1743, making it one of the oldest universities in the country. The university has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1921. Today, in an effort to keep up with the latest technological advances and serve the diverse needs of an expanding student population, the university offers several online degree programs. Available areas of study include nursing, mechanical engineering, and electrical and computer engineering. Individual online classes and a number of certificate programs are also offered through the University of Delaware online. U.S. News & World Report ranked the school’s online nursing programs No. 22 for faculty credentials and training and No. 35 for student engagement and accreditation.

Wilmington University

Wilmington University is a private, four-year institution established in 1968 in New Castle. This school has been accredited by the Middle Sates Commission on Higher Education since 1975 and currently serves more than 10,000 students. Wilmington is just one of a number of colleges and universities in Delaware expanding their online offerings to meet demand. Wilmington offers nearly 40 degree programs at the certificate, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Some of the most popular areas of study include business management, behavioral science, criminal justice, nursing, and psychology. Online masters degree program are also available in administration of justice, applied technology, homeland security, human services, management, and nursing leadership. In addition, Wilmington remains dedicated to ensuring that online students receive the same support services than their on-campus counterparts do.

Students researching online education opportunities will find a number of accredited online universities, as well as traditional schools, with ever-expanding options for distance learners. Most online classes are asynchronous, meaning students are free to login and complete course work whenever fits with their personal and professional schedules. There are no set class times with this format. While the majority of classes can be completely remotely, some schools may still require on-campus components or internships.
