Rutgers University

Chartered in 1766, Rutgers University is the eighth oldest university in the U.S., one of the nine colonial universities founded before the American Revolution, and the largest of all the universities in New Jersey. Rich in history, the university’s main campus lies in New Brunswick, with two smaller campuses located in Newark and Camden. It is the official state university of New Jersey, and is known for playing the first intercollegiate football game in 1869 against Princeton University. Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), Rutgers is home to a wide-ranging distance learning program, though currently undergraduate degrees cannot be completed solely online. It offers both credit and non-credit courses, including certificate programs, in nursing, education, the arts, business, communication and information, management and labor relations, and social work.

Thomas Edison State College

Thomas Edison State College is also an MSCHE-accredited online university and is located in Trenton. Founded in 1972, it is one of the 12 public colleges in New Jersey. It is known as one of the first colleges established in the U.S. to promise a flexible educational experience for busy adults. It hosts online associate, undergraduate, graduate degrees in addition to professional certificate programs. These include offering a given student everything from an online computer science degree to a nursing degree online. The college has also been recognized and ranked by U.S. News and World Report for its online graduate business and online bachelor’s degree programs.

Strayer University

Founded in 1892 as Strayer’s Business College and then renamed Strayer University in 1988, this college serves more than 50,000 students throughout the United States. It offers students in New Jersey the flexibility of an online degree from a North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited and New Jersey Commission of Higher Education licensed university. Students have the option to seek everything from their master’s degree to their associates degree online, as well as various diplomas and certificates. Strayer University offers degrees in, but not limited to, accounting, marketing, management information systems, health services, education, human resource management, and public administration.
