San Jose State University

Established in 1857, San Jose State University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in California. Today, the school serves more than 29,000 students and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. U.S. News & World Report ranked San Jose State University as the No. 10 best public school in the country. In addition, students interested in enrolling in online college courses will find a number of options through SJSU’s eCampus. Online degree programs include areas such as global studies, library information and science, occupational therapy, and public health. Individual online classes are also available in business, communication, education, environmental science, geology, humanities, mathematics, nursing, philosophy, political science, and women’s studies. Both bachelor’s and master’s level courses are offered for online students.

San Jose City College

Originally established as San Jose Junior College in 1921, San Jose City College is a public, two-year institution. The school has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges since 1953 and currently has an enrollment of more than 11,000 students. In an effort to serve the educational needs of a diverse student body, San Jose City College also offers hybrid classes and online programs. Available areas of study include accounting, computer information systems, English, history, library studies, mathematics, psychology, and sociology. Online students will access the virtual classroom through Moodle, a popular e-learning platform. This virtual classroom allows students to view assignments, complete activities, participate in discussions, and receive instructor feedback from any location with Internet access.

Evergreen Valley College

Evergreen Valley College is a public, two-year institution established in 1975. The school currently has a student body of nearly 11,000 learners and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. EVC, like a number of colleges and universities in California, has also expanded their online education offerings in recent years to meet growing demand. Hybrid and online courses are available in astronomy, biology, business, computer and information technology, counseling, environmental science, health education, history, legal assisting, library studies, mathematics, and political science. Online and Web-enhanced courses utilize Moodle, a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment.

San Jose, Calif. is home to nearly one million residents, making it the third largest city in the state and the tenth largest in the country. The area is commonly known as Silicon Valley, with much of the local economy concentrated in engineering, computer technology, and microprocessor manufacturing. Some of the city’s largest employers include Cisco Systems, IBM, San Jose State University, Brocade Communications Systems, and eBay. Local government agencies and school districts are also important employers for San Jose residents.
