Florida International University

Established in 1965, Florida International University is a public, research institution located in Miami. The school has been regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1974 and currently serves more than 42,000 students. FIU Online was launched in recent years to combat classroom overcrowding and meet the varied needs of a growing student body. Online degree programs are offered in finance, human resources, international business, management, marketing, public administration, criminal justice, and nursing. The online bachelors degree programs at Florida International University were ranked third for student services and technology by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the school's online graduate-level engineering and business programs were ranked among the top 50 for student engagement and accreditation.

Florida State University

Located in Tallahassee, Florida State University is a four-year, public, research institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school was established in 1851 and is the flagship university of the State University System of Florida, currently serving more than 40,000 students. FSU is also one of a number of universities in Florida expanding its online education offerings. Both individual online college courses and completely online degrees are available. Areas of study include, but are not limited to, business, computer science, criminology, communications, education, emergency management, engineering, library and information science, nursing, social science, and public safety and security. The online business degree programs were ranked at No. 20 for faculty credentials and training, and the graduate education programs were ranked at No. 12 for admissions selectivity, according to U.S. News & World Report.

University of Florida

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the University of Florida is a public, land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university located in Gainesville. The school was originally established in 1853 and currently serves nearly 50,000 students. With an expanding student population, the school has also embraced technological advances and extended their distance learning programs. University of Florida online courses include subjects such as agriculture, business administration, criminology, digital arts, education, engineering, health education, fire and emergency services, mass communication, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, urban planning, and veterinary medicine. The online bachelor degree programs at the University of Florida were ranked in the top 30 for faculty credentials and training and student engagement and assessment by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the school's online graduate-level programs in education were ranked at No. 2 for admissions selectivity.

There are a number of online colleges and universities in Florida, but more and more traditional universities are also expanding their online courses and degree offerings. This provides working adults and non-traditional students the opportunity to pursue further education, when they previously had few options. Most online programs are asynchronous, meaning students are free to work on their courses whenever and from wherever they have internet access, rather than having to log in at a scheduled time. Some schools, or specific programs, may still have on-campus or field-work components. However, the majority of course work can be completed from any location.
