University of Texas at El Paso

The University of Texas at El Paso is a public, four-year university and part of the University of Texas campus system. It is located on the bank of the Rio Grande River. UTEP is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and it was established in 1914. It has a student body of more than 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Through its distance learning division, the University of Texas at El Paso offers some unique online degrees. In addition to undergraduate and graduate certificates, students can earn an online nursing degree if they already have their RN, complete their bachelor’s in criminology and criminal justice, or complete their bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies. Online graduate degree offerings include a Master of Kinesiology, a Master of Science in Nursing, a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Bilingual) and a Master of Education Instructional Specialist. Students can also earn an alternative teacher certification and a graduate nursing certificate through online courses.

Texas Tech University at El Paso

Texas Tech University is a four-year, public institution in Lubbock. However, Texas Tech has branches and education centers located throughout the state of Texas, including El Paso. The Texas Tech University Health Science Center El Paso Campus is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Several online nursing degrees are available through the TTU Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, including graduate degree programs in education and administration. Undergraduate online degree programs include the RN to BSN completion program. Two graduate degrees can be partially completed through online coursework: the Master of Science in Nurse Practitioner Studies and the RN-MSN in Educational Leadership.

Troy University at El Paso

Troy University at El Paso is part of the extensive Troy University system. The flagship campus for Troy University is located in Troy, Ala., but Troy has established campuses throughout the South. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and it was established in 1887. Troy University’s El Paso campus offers many online degrees across numerous disciplines through the school’s distance learning division, eTroy. Students can earn an MBA, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice, and a Master of Science in Public Administration with a choice of several areas of concentration. Other graduate degree programs are also available online. In addition to several associates degree programs, students can also earn bachelor’s degrees online, including a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Political Science, Business Administration and Interpreter Training, among others.

El Paso is a unique community with many job opportunities that are specific to the region. Its proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border and the New Mexico-Texas state line strongly influences the local economy and job market. Job opportunities available in El Paso do not exist in most cities, such as positions with the Customs and Border Protection Agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). As a result, many online colleges and universities in El Paso offer strong criminal justice programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

However, some of the largest employers in El Paso are in the education industry, such as the El Paso Independent School District, the Ysleta Independent School District, the University of Texas at El Paso and the El Paso Community College. To work in the education realm, online students can earn online degrees in education, teaching, and curriculum and instruction. However, students are strongly encouraged to hone their Spanish-speaking skills if they do not already speak Spanish.
